Frequently Asked Questions
VPN Staffing is an internet platform that matches veterinary professionals (Veterinarians, Registered/Licensed/Certified Vet Techs, Tech Assistants, Reception, and Kennel) looking to fill relief, temporary, or permanent positions with veterinary clinics and hospitals in need of staff.
Veterinary Clinics and Hospitals can maximize their bottom line by maximizing their efficiency using VPN Staffing’s matching technology to smooth out disruptions from short-staff situations and turnover. Are you:
- Finding yourself in need of fill-in staff for a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks?
- Is finding and keeping quality clinic staff costing your practice valuable time and money?
- Do you wish there was a better way?
You are not alone! Our research revealed that 59% of clinics needed temporary staff for a week or more in the last 6 months, 77% needed relief staff for less than a week in the last 6 months, and 82% have a turnover rate HIGHER (in most cases 2 to 3 times!) than the national average for all industries, with each turnover costing them $5,800 in direct and indirect costs. Your staffing problems are costing you money, and it is VPN Staffing’s goal to help you better manage your staff by smoothing out the rough patches with temporary and relief staffing and letting you try-before-you buy permanent employment candidates.
How do I get started? Register as a Clinic or Hospital on VPN Staffing and choose your membership level.
What does it cost? We have three membership levels for you to choose: 1-year, half-year, and no membership fee. Infrequent users can use VPN Staffing with no membership fee, but pay a higher booking fee. Frequent users can get a significant discount on booking fees by selecting a 1-year or half-year membership.
Who pays the vet professionals? Our market research indicated clinics were nearly unanimous in their willingness to pay the vet professionals directly as 1099 independent contractors. Since we don’t have to collect from you to pay them, we pass the savings on to you with low booking fees.
How much are the membership and booking fees? 1-year membership is $120 ($10/month) with a 4% booking fee. Half-year membership is $90 ($15/month) with a 6% booking fee. Use the site with no membership fee and pay 10% booking fees.
What’s a booking fee? When you hire a veterinary professional for a short-term assignment through VPN Staffing, you pay a booking fee equal to the number of work hours booked times the agreed-upon rate of pay times the booking fee. For example, if you need a Tech Assistant to cover an 8-hour shift at $12/hour, and your booking fee is 4%, you pay $3.84.
How do I hire veterinary professionals for shifts? Once you have registered you can put out a request for staff. Choose the type of vet professional you need, the length of time you need them, and your desired hourly rate of pay. Select the skills that are required for the assignment and our matching technology will instantly tell you how many potential staff exist for the job. If you match 0-2 vet professionals, you should consider raising your hourly rate of pay to get more matches, because our staff have told us the minimum rate of pay they will accept. When you create your Job Listing, you will have the option to automatically increase your offer at a rate and time interval you set. Once you submit your request the offer will go out to all matched vet professionals for responses. Want to see who’s responded and available to work your shift? Pay the booking fee for the assignment, and all staff profile information is presented to you so you can screen your matches in advance if you desire.
What happens on the scheduled work day? The confirmation email that is sent to you and the staff you hired is your contract and invoice for that shift. It contains the date, hours, and rate of pay and you can expect your veterinary professional at that time. Once the shift is complete, you pay the professional through the invoice and then VPN Staffing will ask you to submit a rating for the professional to help future clinics find quality matches.
What if I need to hire someone full time? If you want to try-before-you-buy veterinary professionals for your practice, you can indicate in your search to only be matched to those who are also seeking full-time employment. If you find they are the right match for you, make your offer through VPN Staffing and pay a small flat-rate finder’s-fee based on your membership level: 1-Year - $1,500; Half-Year - $2,000; Non-Members - $2,700
Veterinary Professionals can make extra money with their free time, look for a permanent position, or use the VPN Staffing platform to free-lance full-time. Are you:
- Not getting enough hours at your current clinic and need some extra money?
- Looking for a new opportunity?
- Want to be your own boss and make your own hours as a free-lancer?
- Did you just move to town and want to get right to work?
VPN Staffing can do all that for you once you register for free, create a profile, and upload a resume.
How do I get started? Create a free profile on VPN Staffing indicating the type of veterinary professional you are (Veterinarian, Registered/Licensed/Certified Vet Tech, Tech Assistant, Reception, and Kennel), the minimum hourly rate of pay you require, and how far you are willing to travel. Check off the skills that apply to you, upload a resume, enter your professional license information, and wait for the shift notifications to arrive.
What does it cost? Our service costs you nothing. Clinics and hospitals small us a small booking fee for shifts and a finder’s fee for permanent placement.
Who pays me? Our market research indicated clinics were nearly unanimous in their willingness to pay the vet professionals directly as 1099 independent contractors. Since we don’t have to collect from them to pay you, we pass the savings on to clinics with lower fees. To speed up your payment you should have a filled out copy of a W-9 form (http://www.irs.gov/pub/ irs-pdf/fw9.pdf) to bring with you on the day of the shift. The clinic will have a copy of the same confirmation email sent to you, which is both a contract and an invoice for them to pay you.
What if I am looking for permanent placement? You can indicate in your staff profile if you are looking for permanent placement. A clinic or hospital seeking permanent candidates can indicate that in their search requirements and be matched to staff who are looking. You may not know they are looking when you are working your shift unless they tell you. If they decide to make you an offer, they will do so through VPN Staffing.
How do I maintain my license? The requirements for veterinary professional licenses vary from state-to-state. If you use VPN Staffing as your primary source of work leads as a freelancer, it is your responsibility to know and comply with your states requirements necessary for maintaining your credentials
